Faeldon awaiting appointment paper as BuCor head

MANILA — Former Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Nicanor Faeldo has yet to receive his formal appointment as Director General of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), an attached agency of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

In a statement Monday, Faeldon’s lawyer Jose Dino Jr. clarified that “By tradition and practice, it is Malacanang which announces official appointments”.

DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he has already coordinated with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) regarding this matter.

“The President stated a month ago that he wanted Nicanor Faeldon to replace Ronald dela Rosa as Bucor head. So, the DoJ wrote to the CSC and requested the latter to evaluate and endorse Faeldon to the Office of the President as part of the legal requirements for processing the appointment. To date, the appointment itself has not been executed,” Guevarra said in a message to reporters.

“Meanwhile, I designated an OIC, Melvin Buenafe to handle the day-to-day operations of the BuCor. However, his authority as OIC is limited. Thus, the need for the immediate appointment of the Bucor director general”.

Guevarra, on the other hand, admitted that Faeldon cannot assume the post yet pending the release of his appointment papers.

“I supposed he’s just being prudent, maybe just waiting for the appointment process to be completed,” the DOJ secretary said.
