PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan – The provincial government’s solar home system (SHS) distribution program continues in Palawan with 2,467 units recently handed out to residents in Rizal municipality.

Rexie Aborot, project development officer of the province’s Energy Development Program (EDP), said Tuesday the solar home system units were distributed to residents in 11 barangays in the the northern Palawan town on November 9.

“Layon nito na makapagbigay ng pailaw sa mga malalayo at liblib na lugar sa lalawigan na hindi naaabot ng regular na serbisyo ng elektrisidad (This aims to provide electricity in remote barangays in the province that are not reached by regular power services),” Aborot said.

He was referring to the villages of Bunog, Campong Ulay, Candawaga, Canipaan, Culasian, Iraan, Latud, Panalingaan, Punta Baja, Ransang, and Taburi.

Aborot said all beneficiaries underwent strict evaluation procedures conducted by the Provincial Planning and Development Office and the EDP to ensure they are qualified to receive the SHS units and to avoid duplication.

He said beneficiaries are qualified if their homes are 400 meters away from power lines and have attended the orientation prior to the distribution to make sure they know how to take care of the SHS.

Last month, some 1,717 SHS units were distributed in seven barangays in Brooke’s Point, and 4,300 more in 23 villages in Bataraza.

Aborot said the use of alternative energy from the sun is part of the provincial government’s commitment to energize far-flung areas that are off-grid.
