TACLOBAN CITY— Thousands of government officials, researchers, and students will gather at the Samar State University for the Regional Science and Technology (S&T) Week 2018 celebration, showcasing the latest innovations in the country and in the region.

Edgardo Esperancilla, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Eastern Visayas regional director, said in an interview Tuesday that the event will bring remarkable breakthroughs in the field of science and technology, as well as the newest technologies, products and services developed by the government.

DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña will lead the three-day event that will kick off on Wednesday to explain latest technologies such as rice plant growth promoter, development of native chicken and ducks, among others.

“There are line-up of lectures, fora, and exhibits, which would surely spark the interest of the people towards science, technology, and innovation,” Esperancilla said.

This is the first time that the regional S&T week celebration will be held in Samar province, the DOST regional chief said.

“We are inviting technology generators and possible adoptors, entrepreneurs, investors, aspiring researchers and scientists as well as students from across the region to interact and exchange ideas on how we can suitably apply S&T in the attainment inclusive and sustainable development here in the countryside,” he said.

Through technology application, the DOST hopes to curb illegal fishing activities in Samar as people will be able to find alternative livelihood with higher income.

Local technologies that will be highlighted in this event are the upgrading of milled rice processing; improved production of lumber supply; vegetable bread production; common service facility for dried fish, smoked fish, and vacuum packed marinated milkfish; common service facility for root crop food processing, and calamansi juice concentrate production.

This year’s S&T week celebration is anchored on the theme “Innovation for Collective Prosperity.”

The event is celebrated through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993. It aims to recognize the contribution of science and technology in the development of the country and garner support from the public and private institutions for its sustainable development.
