DUMAGUETE CITY — Some 200 senior high school students here are now ready to start with the work immersion program that they are required to undergo before graduation.
Evangel Luminarias, City Schools Division Superintendent, and Mayor Felipe Remollo signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Tuesday to formalize the collaboration between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Dumaguete City government on the program.
All the 200 graduating students, accompanied by their respective advisers, witnessed the symbolic MOA signing between the local government unit and the city division.
The second batch of K to 12 graduating students here comes from the Camanjac National High School, Dumaguete City High School, Junob National High School, Piapi High School, RTPM Dumaguete Science High School, and Taclobo National High School.
With the work immersion program, graduating high school students will experience actual work as a simulation of employment and apply the required competencies and work ethics needed for possible further education.
Luminarias said DepEd is preparing the students to the world of work with three options: “Negosyo, trabaho, o kolehiyo (business, employment, or college education).”
But she said that based on surveys, 80 percent of the senior high school graduating students are pursuing college education.
Luminarias said the students can experience working in hotels, laboratories, and other establishments, but the city government has enough offices, where they can immerse themselves and practice what they have learned in their classrooms.
In his message during the ceremonial MOA signing, Mayor Remollo said he would rather want the senior high graduates to proceed to college, since it pays to have a diploma within the Philippine setting.
The mayor had some tips for the graduating senior high students on their immersion program. He said more than performance and technical ability, work attitude counts much, especially in government service.
