MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is committed to the well-being of the nation by providing the security needed for development projects and other initiatives aimed at boosting the country’s growth.

“The Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines led by Armed Forces of the Philippines chief, General Benjamin Madrigal Jr., are committed to becoming a partner-catalyst for national well-being by providing the security needed to spur development and assist in good governance—true to the framework of Development Support and Security Plan Bayanihan,” said AFP spokesperson, Marine Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo, in a message to reporters Tuesday.

And as such, the AFP is the protector of the people and state as mandated by the Constitution.

“That is our constitutional mandate and we will abide by it,” Arevalo said.

Also, the AFP spokesperson reiterated that all military personnel remain loyal to the flag, to the Constitution, and to the Filipino people.

Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said that ranking AFP officials may have warned President Rodrigo Duterte about a possible coup.

He made this remark a day after Duterte bared that the military was getting restive over problems, particularly, corruption within the government.

“Could be, dahil otherwise hindi sila nagsasalita ng ganoon eh. Meron siguro siyang info, very reliable (because otherwise he wouldn’t talk like that. Perhaps he has very reliable info),” Panelo said.
