AFP: Tension in WPS remains due to China, US activities

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Gilbert Gapay has confirmed that the tension in the West Philippine Sea remains due to the activities of China and United States in the area.

AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Gapay has assured that the government is continuously taking strides to maintain the presence of the Philippines in the WPS. Naval and air patrols are constantly conducted. The augmentation force from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is also present.

Meanwhile, the AFP has distanced itself from the discussion on the territorial dispute in Sabah. Gen. Gapay has disclosed that they have not received any directives regarding the matter.

“But hopefully, in the future maybe still we would adhere to the peaceful diplomatic track should the government would again reopen the issue.”
