Angeles City to develop literacy app for school kids

ANGELES CITY – The city government of Angeles will develop the first-ever Kapampangan literacy application, in a bid to promote mother tongue-based learning to school children.

The project will be jointly undertaken by the City College of Angeles (CCA) and the Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO), in partnership with the Sídduan ning Ámánang Kabiasnang Kapampángan (Institute for Kapampángan Cultural Heritage) and Smart Communications.

The mobile app, which will be named ‘Singsing’ (based on the Kapampangan folk song), will feature native contents such as the Kapampangan indigenous script, numbers, songs and stories designed for kindergarten up to Grade 3 learners.

Under the project, the Sídduan ning Ámánang Kabiasnang Kapampángan (Institute for Kapampángan Cultural Heritage) will give focus on the content, while Smart and CCA will lead the technical aspect of the application, which includes graphic design, animation, storyboarding and digitization.

CCA president Richard Daenos said the project solidifies not only CCA’s but also the city’s commitment in promoting the use of the Amanung Sisuan through digital learning.

City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said the project is a good way to utilize technology, especially now that almost everything is digital.

“We should not compromise our culture and heritage in this digital age. In fact, these should work hand in hand to strengthen basic education learning through the mother-tongue,” Pamintuan said.

The application is expected to be fully uploaded and accessible through Google Play for free in November 2019. (Ric Sapnu/PNA)
