Architect nabbed in CDO raid

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—An architect here was arrested Tuesday morning following a raid on his house that yielded several grenades and firearms.

Police Supt. Melgar Devaras of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) identified the suspect as architect Rey Galua, 43, married and a resident of Golf Estate, Pueblo de Oro, Brgy. Carmen, this city.

CIDG and law enforcement teams from the Philippine Public Safety College (PPSC), Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), Highway Patrol Group and Intelligence Division of the Police Regional Office 10 raided Devaras’ residence at around 9 a.m. based on a search warrant issued by a Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Gingoog City.

Police seized an M61 grenade, an apple-type hand grenade, a .38 revolver, a .45 caliber pistol, a Glock 9mm, and a Colt .45 pistol, police said. Also confiscated were ammunitions and different firearms, including M16 rifle.

Galua, who did not resist arrest, was currently detained at the CIDG-10 headquarters pending the filing of appropriate cases against him.

Police said Galua was a former instructor at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP). He was doing contracting works at the university prior to his arrest.

Police did not say whether Galua was the same person of interest that authorities had earlier referenced in the murder of USTP president Ricardo Rotoras a month ago. (Mark D. Francisco/PNA)
