ASEAN landmark to light up in Boracay

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Aug. 1 — This resort island will light up one of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) landmarks on August 8.

Boracay was chosen as among the 50 sites in the Philippines that will have the iconic ASEAN landmarks for serving as one of the venues for the regional bloc’s meetings and activities.

Boracay hosted two ASEAN meetings including the 23rd meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) from February 13 to 15 and the Foreign Ministers Retreat from February 19 to 21.

The landmark lighting is among the activities lined up to commemorate the 50th year of the ASEAN.

The nationwide simultaneous switching on of the lights will be held at 7:00 p.m. in all 50 sites in the country.

The six-foot fiberglass lantern with 80 pieces of 10-watt incandescent bulbs with a design composed of ASEAN logo and colors will be mounted at Balabag Plaza here.

The lighting activity, which will be facilitated by the Malay Municipal Tourism Office, is expected to gather local officials of Aklan, different government agencies, and the volunteers during the ASEAN meetings here.

The ASEAN landmark will be mounted until November of this year. (Karen V. Bermejo/PNA)
