The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) approved the implementation of a co-education scheme, granting access to female students in its basic education schools starting 2030.

According to the memorandum released by Ateneo President Robert Yap SJ on Friday, Feb. 10, co-ed admission will begin in the school year 2024 to 2025 for Kinder, Grade 1, and Grade 7 levels.

Meanwhile, the full implementation of a co-ed system in its basic education schools will be completed by 2030.

“Much work is needed to prepare the Basic Education schools for this milestone decision,” the memorandum read.

By opening the doors of its grade school and junior high school to female students, Ateneo said that it aims to “increase student diversity by granting female students access to the Ateneo de Manila basic education schools.”

Ateneo was founded as a school exclusive for boys in 1859 during the Spanish colonial era.

The University opened its doors to its first female college students in 1973. -ag
