Bankers group vows support to new BSP chief

MANILA — The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) believes that newly-appointed Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno will introduce reforms that would further strengthen the banking industry.

In a statement Tuesday, BAP said Diokno, who was the Secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) under the Duterte and Estrada administrations and DBM Undersecretary under the first Aquino government, is “a respected economist, academic, and civil servant” who “spearheaded various budget and governance reforms which improved the efficiency of the delivery of government services.”

“The BAP is optimistic that the reformist brand of leadership of the new BSP Governor will pave the way for continuing the necessary reforms and policies to strengthen the Philippine banking industry,” it said.

BAP assured the BSP of its continuous support to the new central bank chief.

“The association will remain committed in its role as a partner of the national government in building a strong economy through an empowered Philippine banking sector,” it added.

Diokno replaced BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr., who died of cancer last February 23.

He was appointed to the position by President Rodrigo R. Duterte Monday.
