Barangay poll winners may become regular gov’t employees: Nograles

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna — Davao City Rep. Karlo Alexei B. Nograles, chairman of the House of Representatives (HOR) Committee on Appropriations said Friday that whoever wins in the barangay elections on May 14 may benefit from the Magna Carta for Barangay Workers once it becomes a law.

Nograles was in town to grace the graduation rites at the Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng San Pablo (DLSP), the city-run higher educational institution. He had side meetings with city officials and some 80 barangay chiefs and city hall department heads.

He also met with San Pablo City Mayor Loreto “Amben” Amante, Laguna 3rd District Representative Sol Aragones, Vice-Mayor Angie Yang and this city’s Liga ng mga Barangay (village league) president Carmelita Amante.

He enjoined local government officials, village leaders and city folks to support the vital piece of legislation that provides benefits and advantages to the village workers who are considered frontliners in the government service.

Nograles said the “soon to be enacted” House measure on the Magna Carta for Barangay Workers provides that village officials from the barangay chair to the treasurer positions would be given regular status as government employees.

“Pag yan po ay naipasa natin, ang ating mga barangay kapitan, barangay kagawad, barangay secretary at barangay treasurer ay magiging regular government employees at kasama na po ang mga benefits ninyo dyan (If the law would be passed, our barangay chairs, village councilors, secretary and treasurer would be regular government employees and would also enjoy the same benefits for government employees),” Nograles said.

He explained if the bill would be passed, barangay workers would receive benefits such as on Philhealth, Pag-ibig, GSIS, pension, scholarship for their children and all other benefits enjoyed by regular government employees.

The Magna Carta for Barangay Workers, Nograles said, the legislative measure is one of the priorities of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, through the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), for village workers to be absorbed as regular government civil servants.(PNA)
