BATANGAS CITY, Batangas – Some 250 scholars of Batangas Province High School for Culture and Arts (BPHSCA) paid homage to the “mother of Philippine flag,” Marcela Mariño Agoncillo with an experimental musical “Roselang Bubog” which three-day theatrical performances culminated Thursday at the Provincial Capitol auditorium here.
With the theme “May dilag ang dula sa paglayang minahamahal” (a lady in the play towards the freedom we love), the musical aims to mirror the life and works of this Taal born and country’s original “flag-maker” as well as to promote the rich cultural heritage of the province.
BPHSCA Theater Specialist Reynaldo S. De Mesa shared that the annual event serves as a culminating activity to further hone the skills of the students in various art disciplines.
“Ang buong produksyon ay orihinal na nilikha ng mga mag-aaral mula sa mga ginamit na awitin at inilapat na mga tunog at musika” (the whole production is an original concept of our student, from the songs used, musical accompaniment) with the help of the teachers who honed these young/raw talents to make a splendid production on the rich Batangas culture, De Mesa said.
After watching the show, Batangas Governor Hermilando ‘Dodo’ Mandanas, who established the said school when he was still the city’s mayor, praised the school’s young cultural performers whose musical production are at par with big dramatic and stage productions at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
Mandanas, joined by Merly Pasatiempo of the Scholarship Division of the Provincial Board, beamed with pride as he remarked that the event was truly a celebration of Batangas’ culture and talents.
The three-day run of the musical had a parallel exhibit themed “Kabataan ng Sining” (the youth of arts) also at the Provincial Capitol. (Gladys Pino/PNA)
