Benguet polls generally peaceful: Comelec

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls in Benguet province have so far been generally peaceful, a Commission on Election (Comelec) official in this province said on Monday.

“So far no untoward incidents have been reported,” Benguet Provincial Election Supervisor Elenita Julia Tabangin-Capuyan observed as of 12:30 p.m. on May 14. “I hope the situation will remain peaceful until the canvassing of ballots and the proclamation of winners.”

Benguet has a total of 211,984 regular voters and 73,463 SK voters. The province also has a total of 1,419 precincts and 734 clustered precincts, covering a 140 barangays within 13 municipalities.

The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Office of Civil Defense (RDRRMC-OCD) also reported no untoward incident in the region, especially on the day of the election.

The Cordillera RDRRMC Emergency Operations Center has raised its alert status to Blue effective 8 a.m. of May 12 until 5 p.m. on May 15 to ensure the security of the elections.

Meanwhile, the Cordillera RDRRMC said all national roads in the region are passable, except for the Conner-Kabugao Road in Apayao due to ongoing construction of the Matatag Bridge.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Cordillera has also reported that the Acop-Kapangan-Kibungan-Bakun road leading to the Mayos, Kibungan was closed to vehicular traffic as of 3:10 p.m. Monday due to a landslide caused by heavy rains.

The DPWH is advising the public to take the Palina-Sinipsip section as an alternative route. (PNA)
