Women detainees were vaccinated by the Quezon City government against COVID-19 on Thursday.

The vaccination of 595 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the QC Female Dormitory in Camp Karingal was led by the city health department and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

They received Sinovac jabs.

Bahagi ito ng No Woman Left Behind Program ng lokal na pamahalaan na layong makatulong sa ikabubuti, pangangalaga at edukasyon ng mga kababaihang nasa piitan,” the city government posted on Facebook late Thursday.

Detainees are more prone to contracting COVID-19 and other diseases because of overcrowding in jail facilities, which makes physical distancing almost impossible.

The OCTA Research likewise noted a slight increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the city, based on the July 26 data from the Department of Health and the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit.

QC’s current Reproduction Number (R0) is at 1.18, a slight increase from last week’s 0.94.

R0 indicates the number of individuals who can get infected by a COVID-19 positive person.

An R0 that is lower than 1 means each confirmed COVID-19 case has a small chance of infecting another person or cause a new infection.

Moreover, the city’s positivity rate also rose to 8 percent, higher than the 5 percent standard set by the World Health Organization.

As of Friday, the city still has 2,363 active COVID-19 infections or 2.2 percent of the total 107,264 infected since March 2020.

More than 1.3 million have been vaccinated, including 512,620 who have received their second doses. (PNA)-rir
