CBCP warns public vs. phishing scams using Papal Nuncio’s name

By Ferdinand Patinio | Philippine News Agency

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) warned the faithful against phishing scams using the name of the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila.

In an article posted on the CBCP news website, Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, CBCP Secretary General, said the scammers using an email (electronic mail), would act as Archbishop Charles Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.

He added that those who are behind the scheme are targeting people using Yahoo Mail by asking them to enter their login details to receive a “confidential message”.

“It is a phishing attempt to get their (yahoo mail) account details,” the CBCP official said in a letter to dioceses.

The government has repeatedly advised the public not to reply to suspicious emails

The Anti-Money Laundering Council reminded the people not to answer questionable emails so as not to be victimized by such scams.

Likewise, authorities urged the public not to click any link in a suspicious message they receive and not to give personal and financial information requested through email. – gb
