CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The city’s boxing team is mulling to compete with other boxing teams around the world in the upcoming 2019 Arafura Games in Australia, Mayor Oscar Moreno said Monday.

Moreno said the city’s participation in the 2019 Arafura Games in Darwin Northern Territory in Australia on April 26 to May 4 this year will be based on the recommendation of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Ramirez.

“It’s an honor of the city that PSC sees the potential of our boxing team to represent the country as a delegation of that meet,” Moreno said, referring to a letter from Ramirez informing the local government of the Australia competition.

The Arafura Games is a multi-sport event where teams and delegates of approximately 3,500 athletes from 30 nations will participate in a total of 18 events.

The Philippine Team will also participate in athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, muay thai, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and weightlifting.

Moreno said the local boxing team, headed by Elmer Pamisa, will be sent to Davao City to attend a briefing and presentation on January 17 to discuss the processing of the selection of boxers.

Moreno said the city’s amateur boxing development program has produced formidable boxers in the national boxing team, such as 2018 Asian Games bronze medalist Carlo Paalam.
