Cebu guv reminds gov’t workers to stay away from gambling

CEBU CITY — Governor Hilario Davide III reminded government officials and employees on Monday to stay away from gambling establishments, such as casinos and cockpit arenas.

Davide issued his reminder after PO2 Cyrelle Bayate of this city’s Pari-an Police Station and Cordova Municipal Councilor Lemuel Pogoy were arrested last Friday while playing on slot machines in separate casinos in Metro Cebu.

“That prohibition has been there. But we have to remind them to avoid casinos and other gambling places because it’s prohibited,” the governor said.

Bayate and Pogoy faced charges for violating Article 231 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to Presidential Decree 1869, which prohibits government officials and employees from going to houses of pleasure and gambling establishments.

The policewoman was eventually relieved from service, while the councilor was released after charges against him were dismissed. (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
