Chemical leak affects 47 in Davao

DAVAO CITY–A chemical leak discovered inside a residential area affected 47 adults and children, who are now declared safe after getting treatment from the Central 911 medical team.

The leak came out from one of the 15 bottles containing suspected chemical buried inside a house at Purok Sto Nino, Riverside, Km 9 in Sasa, this city on late Monday afternoon.

The strong odor caused dizziness and pain to the noses of the victims prompting a concerned citizen to call Central 911 for assistance.

Initial investigation conducted by Sasa police revealed that the odor came from the house owned by Cosme Sanchez particularly inside the room of his son Regil Daya alias Duco.

The 23-year-old Regil was a former employee of BMEG.

The responding unit from the BFP Special Rescue Unit 911 ambulance, Task Force Davao conducted procedures to contain the chemical odor.

They were able to retrieved one-half sack containing more or less 15 to 20 pieces of one liter and a 500ml bottle of insecticide marked “JALEM 500 EC” which were buried one foot deep below the ground.

The chemical materials were brought to the BFP-(EMB) Environmental Management Bureau for proper disposition.

The incident is still under investigation, but the area has been declared safe for the residents. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
