CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga — The Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) is eyeing to resume partial operations on Wednesday, April 24, shortly after an assessment showed the tower, apron, runways, and taxiways are structurally sound following the magnitude 6.1 earthquake that jolted Luzon Monday.
“The good news is that the tower can be operated, there was no substantial damage. The taxiways and runways are all okay,” CIAC president Jaime Melo said in a press briefing.
Melo said at least 1,500 passengers were stranded after the tremor, both at the departure and arrival areas.
“Talks with the airline companies were already initiated for the rebooking of the stranded passengers due to the quake,” Melo said.
Likewise, he said that the Department of Transportation is offering a free shuttle for rebooking passengers going to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
Meanwhile, Melo said clearing operations and repairs inside the departure area and the terminal building are ongoing.
Seven people were reported to have sustained minor injuries and as of 10:30 p.m. Monday, power has also been fully restored in Clark.
Melo said all roads and bridges have also been assessed and cleared.
He further said that Clark Development Corporation has designated temporary shelters for travelers and tourists who were affected by the temporary closure of the Clark International Airport.
These include the Training Center at Health and Sanitation Division, the pavilion at Bicentennial Park, the Philippine Air Force Gym, and the Clark Parade Grounds. Water and food are also being provided in these shelters.
The CIAC will be giving another update later this afternoon.
