Clean-up day in Central Visayas postponed due to ‘Ompong’

CEBU CITY — Activities set for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day on Saturday in various parts of Central Visayas have been postponed due to Typhoon Ompong.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 (Central Visayas) Director Gilbert Gonzales said Thursday the postponement is in compliance with the advisory from the ICC national coordinator as the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rains in some parts of the Visayas on Friday and Saturday.

To ensure the safety of all the volunteers, Gonzales said the observance of the ICC Day will be held instead on September 22.

About 7,000 volunteers in the region have already signed up for the activity, but DENR-7 is still calling for more volunteers to join as the event has been rescheduled to next week.

Volunteers were reminded to bring clean-up tools and used sacks instead of garbage bags during the activity. The use of disposable surgical gloves is discouraged.

Participants in Cebu were advised to proceed to the clean-up sites in Barangay Pooc, Talisay City or in Barangays Langtad and Binlod in Argao town, some 70 km. south of Cebu City.

In Bohol, the clean-up sites are located in Bahi, Alburquerque town, Barangay Upper de la Paz in Cortes, and Barangay San Francisco in Talibon.

Similar activities will also be held in Silliman Beach in Dumaguete City and in Tayasan, Negros Oriental.

In Siquijor, the sites designated for cleaning are located in Tulapos, Poblacion and Binuongan, Enrique Villanueva town.

This year’s ICC Day observance carries the theme, “Tayo and Solusyon sa Polusyon” (We are the solution to pollution). (Luel Galarpe/PNA)
