COMELEC: No plans to postpone 2022 elections


The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has no plans to postpone the 2022 elections.

According to COMELEC Chairman Sheriff Abas, moving the election date is in the hands of Congress to. A provision in the Constitution exists wherein all terms of incumbent officials shall end on June 30. The Constitution should be amended to move the election date.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Pampanga 2nd District Representative Mikey Arroyo earlier suggested the suspension of elections due to the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

In relation with this, the voters’ registration is being carried out nationwide. However, according to the recent report of the COMELEC, the number of registrants has only reached 250,000 since its start on September 1, a far cry from the 4 million projected number. – PTV News
