The concrete barriers in some parts of EDSA will be replaced with steel bollards.
A private company has donated 6,000 steel bollards to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). These are believed to be more durable since they are lodged on the road and save more space.
“So ngayon, with the introduction of the bollards that will complement the concrete barriers ay ninipis po ‘yung ma-o-occupy na space ng mga separators and it will give more space to the private vehicle lanes (So now, with the introduction of the bollards that will complement the concrete barriers, the occupied space of the separators will be more narrow and it will give more space to the private vehicle lanes),” MMDA EDSA Traffic Management Unit Chief Col. Edison Bong Nebrija explained.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has stated that bike lanes in EDSA, Quezon City and Manila have been provided with barriers in answer to the calls of health care workers for a safer bike lane on the way to their respective duties.
Quezon Avenue, Elliptical Road, East Avenue, United Nations (UN) Avenue, Taft Avenue, Quirino Avenue and Roxas Boulevard have been prioritized due to a limited budget.
The DPWH has assured that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will issue the standard bike lane guidelines nationwide before the end of August. – Report from Karen Villanda
