Confab to tackle responsible use of gadgets in digital age

ILOILO CITY – Around 150 to 200 campus leaders and writers from Western Visayas will gather for a “Digital Youth Conference” here on Oct. 16.

In an interview Monday, conference director Rowena Diaz said the one-day regional event will focus on “leveraging technology to educate students to be digitally responsible citizens, smart and successful digital users or learners.

“This will be an essential learning for the young generation for them to make meaningful contributions as citizens and workers in the digital age,” she said.

She added that the conference is part of the initiatives of the Virtual Workforce Professionals (VWP) Academy that her group has established. The VWP trains individuals who are interested to pursue careers as virtual assistants.

“We decided to design a module for the secondary level; this is the generation that is massive users of gadgets. They are very young to truly understand the impact of the different communication gadgets available to them,” she added.

Diaz said it would be a conference cum literary competition. In between plenary speakers, there will be a literary contest to include extemporaneous speaking, impromptu and essay writing contests

Topics for discussion include Tech Talk: 4th Industrial Revolution, Thinking Critically and Adapting to Digital Change and Innovation and Writing an Essay in the Digital Era.

“All students will be qualified to join. Top five winners in each category will receive medal of excellence,” she added.

The event is in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Department of Education, Division of Iloilo. (Perla Lena/PNA)
