Davao City starts clampdown on jaywalkers

DAVAO CITY, Sept. 12 – Jaywalkers in Davao City will face stiffer sanctions if caught by traffic enforcers.

Those caught jaywalking will be given a City Traffic Citation Ticket (CTCT), requiring them to pay a fine of P100 or undergo a 4-hour compulsory service. Previously, jaywalkers were mandated to undergo a seminar.

Aside from jaywalking, the CTCT also includes several traffic offenses such as illegal parking and obstruction of traffic.

There are also fines for other offenses such as reckless and dangerous driving, P1,500; not wearing of seatbelts, P300; speed limit violation, P500; no safety helmets, P500; no registration, P500; modification of mufflers on motorcycle, P500; no driver’s license, P500; excess passenger, P500; illegal parking, P500; failure to switch headlights, P1,000; obstruction, P500; truck ban violation, P1,000; disregarding traffic signs, P500; no PUV driver’s ID, P1,000; loading and unloading of passengers in undesignated areas, P1,000 and driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, P5,000.

The Land Transportation Office will not renew the offender’s driver’s license if the citation ticket is not yet paid.

Jaywalkers may have the option to render community service as supervised by the City Social Services Development Office (CSSDO) if they cannot pay the P100 fine. These community services may include cleaning the city’s parks or preparing meals in the city’s six residential facilities. (PIA/RG Alama)
