Davao continues to experience intermittent internet connectivity

DAVAO CITY – Davao City continues to experience intermittent internet connection or slow connectivity after the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) reportedly suffered cuts in its fiber transmission.

This drew the ire of the subscribers of PLDT’s voice and data services. In an advisory posted on its Facebook account, PLDT’s many subscribers are asking rebates, among other demands.

In the July 9 advisory, PLDT informed subscribers in several areas in Mindanao that its fiber transmission network suffered four successive cuts caused by ongoing road construction work.

The affected areas include the Davao Region, some areas in SoCSKSarGen, and parts of Caraga and Bukidnon. The company said its repair works are being hampered by heavy downpour in the affected areas.

Davao City Councilor Conrado Baluran said he was assured by PLDT representatives they would work to improve and provide better services.

Baluran, the Chairman of the City Council Committee on Communications and Transportation, said he himself has been swamped with complaints from his constituents.

The councilor also said PLDT has sought the help of the government on the rampant theft of cable line facilities in the city.

“The incident is the primary reason why there is a service interruption in the internet connection and telephone lines,” Baluran said.

Based on the PLDT report, Baluran said for one full length of stolen cable wire alone, more or less 300 to 400 households will be affected and suffer for the loss of connection.

He said the cable wires are made of pure copper wires and cost PHP500 per kilo if sold in junk shops.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson, Senior Insp. Maria Teresita Gaspan, said a police operation against cable wire thieves on June 28 led to the recovery of 50 meters of copper wire owned by PLDT. (Lilian C. Mellejor/PNA)
