DCWD: Enough water to supply real estate boom in Davao City

By Digna Banzon/Philippine News Agency

DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Water District (DCWD) has assured that it can supply the water needs of the growing number of condominiums and residential subdivisions in the city.

Lawyer Bernard Delima, DCWD spokesperson, said Wednesday the water utility already received 64 applications for condominiums and high rise buildings and 58 for housing subdivisions as of this month.

Delima said real estate developers are required to divulge their water requirements based on the number of units in a building or a subdivision.

DCWD also requires condominiums and high rise buildings to build a cistern tank, an underground water tank that can supply the need of individual units. Developers may only draw water from DCWD’s system during off-peak so the nearby communities will have water during peak hours, Delima said.

“These projects are still in the development stage but they already have areas and I think completion at the earliest is in 2021 to 2022,” he said.

By that time, Delima said the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBWSP) of Apo Agua Infrastructure, Inc. will already be operational.

“The construction of the facilities of the DCBWSP is ongoing and target for start of operation is on the first half of 2021. The bulk water project is using the surface water in Tamugan River,” he said.

Delima said Apo Agua will deliver to DCWD 345 million liters a day.

Currently, DCWD produces almost the same volume of water from its production wells. If the Apo Agua project is already commissioned, Delima said some of the production wells will be temporarily “put to rest”.

“But in times when there will be increases in water needs we can always bring them back to operation,” he said.
