DENR locates Boracay’s 30-meter shoreline mark

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — The team of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Wednesday began locating all established monuments that serve as the marker for the 25+5 beach easement in Boracay.

This is to identify all the buildings and structures that are encroaching on the 30-meter shoreline easement.

The DENR team with local officials and representatives of the business and civic sectors covered the area from Station 3 until Station 1 of the 4-km. White Beach.

DENR 6 (Western Visayas) Regional Director Jim Sampulna on Wednesday urged establishments within the easement to self-demolish their structures.

He said it is under the jurisdiction of Malay’s municipal government to give the demolition order to erring establishments.

DENR Assistant Regional Director Livino Duran said the monument established by the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (Namria) in 2007 will serve as their reference point in implementing the easement rule.

The DENR team also began marking the 6-meter setback from the center of the road along the island’s major streets earlier on Tuesday. All establishments within the road setback were also advised to self-demolish.

Meanwhile, in an interview on Wednesday, Rowen Aguirre, executive assistant of Malay’s local government, said they will crack down on all violators in the island, one of which is Boracay West Cove in Sitio Diniwid in Barangay Balabag, which was demolished by the local government on Wednesday morning.

Aguirre said the resort was ordered demolished for operating without business, occupancy and building permits. ( Karen Bermejo/PNA)
