CEBU CITY – The Department of Education here has given recognition to teaching, non-teaching personnel, and public and private stakeholders during the DepEd Cebu Province Achievers annual awarding ceremony.

Dr. Rhea Mar Angtud, Cebu Schools Division Superintendent, on Tuesday said around 200 DepEd Cebu employees and “external partners” were recognized for their “outstanding and exemplary performance and significant contribution and support to education.”

In a phone interview, Dr. Margarita Nierra, DepEd-Cebu’s Human Resource Development Officer, said 160 teachers who have just retired and those who are retiring this year were given the Gawad Serbisyo Award.

Nierra said the retirees received a plaque come from 56 schools’ division of the province.

Two teachers were awarded for having served the DepEd for at least 40 years. Nierra identified them as Alicia Cimafranca of the District of Pinamungajan and Melinda Luzano of the District of Santander.

The Cebu Province Division Office bested other DepEd provincial offices in the “Best 5S Unit Award.” Dr. Nierra explained that 5S stands for the methodology in arranging an office, which, according to the Wikipedia, follows the principles of “Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.”

Six elementary and high school campuses were awarded for being the best wellness campus, and 22 schools as “Best Brigada Eskwela 2018 Implementors,” she said.

The DepEd in the province headed by Dr. Angtud also awarded 16 Schools Divisions for their readiness to host big events and competitions.

Nierra said they also recognized 30 teachers for successfully coaching elementary pupils and high school students in the Regional Schools Press Conference. The Division of Cebu won in the regional presscon.

Dr. Angtud also handed over the “Friends of Education” award to 50 municipalities, cities, and different civic organizations in the province like Rotary, Gawad Kalinga, Shangri La Hotel, Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, and Jollibee for their constant support to education.

“These municipalities and cities are recognized because of their readiness in hosting big educational events. Their mayors are very friendly to the education sector,” Nierra told the Philippine News Agency. “These civic organizations helped the DepEd province so much by constructing school buildings and other educational facilities.”

The awarding ceremony was held in the International Eucharistic Congress Pavilion, San Carlos Seminary Compound in Mabolo, Cebu City.
