DILG seeks guidance after Davao village execs fail to elect prexy

DAVAO CITY–The Commission on Elections (Comelec) here may call another poll for the Liga ng Barangay in this city after a failure of election for the position of president.

During the July 26 scheduled election to elect the president of this city’s Liga ng Barangay, none of the elected barangay captains proceeded to nominate among themselves for the position vacated by presidential daughter-in-law and incumbent Barangay Catalunan Grande  Chairperson January Duterte.

January, who served as Liga president for six years, did not seek reelection.

Department of the Interior and Local Government-11 (DILG-11) Regional Director Alex Roldan, said the elected Liga vice president, Chairman Edgar Ibuyan of Barangay 5-A, will act as officer-in-charge until a Liga president is elected.

However, under the law, the Liga vice president cannot automatically be appointed as the president. He cannot also run as president if an election is called.

Roldan said there needs to be an election for the president’s position only, adding it would depend on Comelec to set the election for the vacant position.

Mayor Sara Duterte, on Friday, said the city government through the DILG already sought the guidance of the national Liga on the status of Ibuyan, who will represent the barangays in the City Council.

Meantime, Mayor Sara said Ibuyan will sit as OIC until a president is elected.

Ibuyan is not new to the work of Liga president, having served for three consecutive terms before presidential son Paolo Duterte, who was a former barangay captain of Catalunan Grande. (Lilian C Mellejor/PNA)
