Disaster preparedness race up anew in Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY — A disaster preparedness race will be held anew in this city on Nov. 8 in line with the 5th commemoration of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Dubbed as “Saving Race 2,” the competition, now on its second year, will challenge the player’s mental resilience and physical strength in times of natural disasters and emergency situations.

An Waray Partylist has been accepting applications since August 29.  It will run until Oct. 13, 2018.

Partylist Rep. Victoria Noel said the race is patterned after “The Amazing Race,” a reality television game show in which teams of two persons race around in competition.

Contestants strive to arrive first at a pit stop at the end of each leg of the race to win prizes and avoid coming in last. All tasks or challenges will be related to disaster preparedness and risk reduction management.

“At least 20 pre-screened teams will be chosen to join the race. Each team must be endorsed by a government-recognized group, school or local government units. Each team will be composed of two racers and one logistical support,” Noel said on Tuesday.

“Contestants will race around the city and strive to arrive first at pre-identified checkpoints and do the tasks as fast as possible,” Noel told reporters.

Clues provided in each leg will lead the teams to the next checkpoint or direct them to perform a task, either together or as a single member.

Participants should be 18 to 40 years old and residents of Eastern Visayas region. Announcement of the 20 eligible race applicants will be on October 19. (Lizbeth Ann Abella/PNA)
