BACOLOD CITY — Farmers and animal raisers in Negros Occidental incurred damage and production losses worth PHP3.9 million due to monsoon rains enhanced by Typhoon Ompong over the weekend.
As of Monday afternoon, the rice sector in four Negros Occidental localities reported almost PHP3.8 million in losses, figures from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist showed.
Among those affected included 713 farmers, with combined areas of 764.38 hectares in 13 villages.
Based on reports, covering the period of September 14 to 16, San Carlos City posted the highest at PHP2.1 million in losses involving 646 farmers with 679.80 hectares of rice fields in six barangays.
In Cadiz City, almost PHP1.5 million in losses was reported, affecting 55 farmers with 54 hectares in four barangays.
Affected in the south were Bago City and Moises Padilla.
Bago, the rice granary of Negros Occidental, however, incurred production losses of PHP192,240.
Latest data showed nine farmers with 10.68 hectares were affected in one village in Bago.
In Moises Padilla, three farmers in two barangays reported PHP24,299 in damage to an area of 1.90 hectares.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Veterinary Office reported livestock losses of about PHP120,000 in four barangays of three localities.
From September 14 to 15, the affected animals are cattle, sow, fattener, piglet and calf, all being raised in backyard farms.
Losses reached PHP95,374 in Candoni’s Barangays East and West.
In Kabankalan City, three backyard farms in Barangay Bantayan incurred PHP20,000 worth of losses, affecting farmers raising ducks, native chickens, and piglets.
A total of PHP4,633 worth of chicken layers in a backyard farm at Barangay 2, Hinoba-an was also lost. ( /PNA)
