DND: Success of Trump-Kim talks to improve Asia security situation

MANILA — Should the meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore turn out as a success, the security sitation in Asia will greatly improve.

This was stressed by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana when asked on how the US-North Korea summit could affect the Philippines.

“Not only Philippines, it benefits the whole region kasi palaging naggigirian yung dalawa dyan eh sa Korean Peninsula (because there is frequent tension in the Korean Peninsula), the US and the South Koreans against the North Koreans eh nakabantay din sa kabila yung China dun (China is also keeping a close watch on the other side),” he added.

And should war erupt between these countries, Lorenzana said it will be really bloody so it is good that these nations are now talking with one another.

“It will be bloody kung magkaroon ng giyera (once war breaks out) so now that they are talking that’s good for everybody. Para maibsan yung intensity ng conflict, yung bumaba yung tension (It is to reduce the intensity of the conflict and to ease tension) and maybe there will be progress there in North Korea at magkaroon din ng development dun (and there will also be development there) ,” Lorenzana added.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet in Singapore’s Sentosa Resort Tuesday to discuss the groundwork for ending nuclear stand-off and possible peace talks. (Priam Nepomuceno/PNA)
