DOE, Phivolcs partner to boost energy sector’s resiliency

MANILA — The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) will ink partnership on Friday to boost the energy sector’s resiliency and disaster preparedness.

The two agencies will sign a memorandum of agreement, “Capacity Enhancement of the Energy Sector on Hazard, Risk Assessment, and Exposure Database Development Through the use of REDAS Software”, to help enhance the energy sector’s ability to identify areas that might be greatly affected by earthquake incidents.

These areas will be identified using state-of-the-art software called Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS), the DOE added.

Through DOE’s partnership with Phivolcs, the energy sector will undergo REDAS training.

REDAS, described as a tool for emergency planning and preparedness, was created to reduce disaster risks and adverse effects of an earthquake.

The DOE noted that REDAS could provide the users with real-time earthquake hazard information, which would help the industry to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, the DOE said its partnership with Phivolcs is also in line with the recently signed Department Circular on energy resiliency policy.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, DOE Undersecretary Jesus Cristina Posadas, and DOST Undersecretary Renato Solidum are expected to attend the MOA signing on Friday. (PNA)
