DOE warns of possible lack of power supply in Luzon

The Department of Energy (DOE) warned on Thursday (June 17) about the possibility of Luzon lacking power supply again.

In the senate hearing of the Committee on Energy, DOE Electric Power Industry Management Bureau Director Mario Marasigan said the Luzon grid may again experience yellow to red alert status this week due to the maintenance of a GMEC (GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co.) Unit 1 in Mariveles, Bataan and Sual Unit 1 in Pangasinan.

This is in line with the permission initially given to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to conduct maintenance on the Ilijan and Pagbilao power plants.

Marasigan said the three maintenance activities will be simultaneously performed.

He clarified to Committee Chairperson Senator Sherwin Gatchalian that the maintenance will not mean brown-outs in Luzon because they have taken steps to prevent power outages.
