‘The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday, Dec. 29, reported eight new cases of fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) in the country including a lady who suffered hearing loss after passive exposure to a “kwitis”.

In its latest report, the DOH said the new cases of FWRIs, of which seven are males, occurred at home and in the streets.

The eighth victim was a 23-year old woman from Central Luzon who experienced hearing damage due to exposure to the “kwitis” or sky rocket, the Health department said in a statement.

Of the new cases, six were caused by active involvement in illegal fireworks.

“There have been no additional reports of amputation or ingestion thus far,” the DOH noted.

A total of 96 FWRIs have been recorded from Dec. 22 to Dec. 29 with 33 cases coming from the National Capital Region and 12 injuries both coming from Central Luzon and Ilocos Region.

Of the total number of cases, 57 or 60% were due to illegal firecrackers including Boga, Five-star, Piccolo, and Pla-pla.

Additionally, the DOH reminded the public to use hearing protections in case of exposure to fireworks as their loud sounds can lead to immediate pain and ear injury.

It is also advised to consult a doctor if a person exposed to firework explosions notices any pain, discomfort, ringing, or buzzing in their ears.

“Watching community fireworks displays from a safe distance is still the best,” the DOH said. – avds
