DOST-2 backs Gawaygaway-yan Festival thru S&T activities

TUGUEGARAO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 2 has committed to support the upcoming Gawaygaway-yan Festival in Cauayan City, Isabela as part of its cityhood anniversary on April 2.

The two-week celebration of the festival is also the residents’ expression of gratitude for the city’s bountiful harvest. It recognizes the city’s cultural diversity and the ancestry of Cauayeños.

Regional Director Sancho Mabborang said the DOST will facilitate science and technology activities in the upcoming festival to promote and increase the interest of people regarding science and technology.

“Since Cauayan City has embraced the framework of ‘Smarter City’, DOST Region 2 will help achieve this through Science and Technology,” he said.

There will be a science explorer bus to encourage people, especially students, to take interest in science and technology along with a science exhibit to showcase Cauayan City’s food and non-food products.

Also, a robotics competition with a bamboo concept will be held to test the participants’ innovative minds.

Aside from these activities, the DOST will be partnering with the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 2 in conducting a poster-making competition for primary and secondary schools during the festival.

DOST-2 will also launch the first Regional Standards and Testing Unit, a Satellite Laboratory, and a Food Innovation Laboratory in the province of Isabela.

To ensure proper and a well-organized conduct of these activities, a committee on science and technology was assigned to Isabela State University (ISU) Cauayan and the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC)-Isabela.

Cauayan City Mayor Bernard Faustino Dy expressed his gratitude to DOST for incorporating innovations brought by Science and Technology to the Gawaygaway-yan Festival. (Simeon Dilan/PNA)
