Space enthusiasts, students, and tourists are all invited to explore the universe and all things celestial as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) opened Mindanao’s first planetarium to the public on Monday.
The planetarium, which also began accepting requests for lectures and shows, is located at the PAGASA Station in Barangay Molugan, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental.
The facility boasts state-of-the-art visualization and immersive multimedia technology, allowing visitors to get on a journey through the universe from distant galaxies to the constellations of stars.

Aside from its theater and dome for astronomical shows, the planetarium also houses telescopes for those who are into stargazing. It also features a small astronomical observatory, a gallery hall, and a conference room.
For PAGASA, the planetarium is aimed at fostering curiosity and developing the culture of scientific inquiry to contribute to Mindanao’s socio-economic development and celebrate the region’s scientific heritage.
“More than just a venue for astronomical amazement, it will also serve as a dynamic center for research, education, and outreach, aiming to inspire a new generation of astronomers and space science enthusiasts,” the state weather bureau said in a press release.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) inaugurated the planetarium on May 17.
DOST Sec. Renato Solidum Jr. said the new planetarium marks a significant achievement in science education and infrastructure development in Mindanao.
“We hope that the establishment of the Mindanao Planetarium is just a kick-off of many more science-centered facilities here in Region X because we, in DOST commit to you as OneDOST4U, to provide solutions and open opportunities to the people of Misamis Oriental through Science, Technology, and Innovation,” Solidum said. – avds
