ZAMBOANGA CITY –The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has allocated PHP360 million for the implementation this year of a flood control project for the urban core and central district of this city.

District 1 Rep. Celso Lobregat, chair of the House Committee on Public Works and Highways, on Monday said the project will include the installation of a pumping station to resolve the flooding in the city proper.

Lobregat noted that the lowest portion of the city proper gets flooded every time there is heavy downpour.

He said that water rushed and accumulated in the vicinity of a school at the junction of Pilar Street and Veterans Avenue and the severity of the flooding depends on the tide.

He said the drafting of a master plan for flood mitigation is ongoing.

He said this included the purchase of a property along Pilar street to house the pumping station.

“This master plan to solve the flooding problem has been long sought after. Not only the plan but funding for its implementation is included in the General Appropriations Act (GAA) for 2018, he added.

The project is part of the Build, Build, Build program of President Rodrigo Duterte. (Teofilo Garcia, Jr/PNA)
