DPWH eyes replacement of Tripa de Gallina bridge portion in July

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is looking at replacing the southbound portion of the Tripa de Gallina Bridge in Pasay City, this month.

According to Anna Mae Lamentillo, “Build, Build, Build” Committee chairman, the budget allocated for the construction of the bridge is at PHP25 million under the 2018 national budget.

“The Tripa de Gallina Bridge Southbound is due for replacement. It is funded under 2018. Construction will start this July. Implementation by South Manila District Engineering Office,” she said in a text message.

Lamentillo added that the bridge is included on the list of 12 bridges under the Bridge Management System as of Nov 2017.

“Date of construction estimated to be from 1940s to 1970s as per bridge inventory,” she said.

On the other hand, DPWH National Capital Region (NCR) District Director Melvin Navarro explained that the southbound part of the structure will be replaced by bored pile foundation for it to be resistant to earthquake.

“The bridge will be seismic resistant that can handle ground acceleration that ranges 7-8 magnitude,” he said in an interview on Monday.

“The southbound (portion) was damaged due to heavy loads,” Navarro added, noting that, “Southbound has many cracks, based on our visual condition data.”

Navarro said they are still coordinating with the Metro Manila Development Authority for the establishment of alternate routes for affected motorists. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
