DPWH reopens Biliran’s Caraycaray Bridge to light vehicles

MANILA —The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has re-opened to light vehicles the  typhoon-damaged Caraycaray Bridge along Biliran-Naval Circumferential Road in the province of Biliran after inplementing backfiling and embankment works that serve as temporary passage for the public.

In a statement, DPWH Biliran District Engineering Office Assistant District Engineer Alfredo Bollido said the bridge is now open to 4-wheel light vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles.

Bollido, however, said heavy bags and cargoes inside light vehicles should be unloaded first when crossing the bridge so as to prevent further damage on the bridge.

The structure was closed to traffic due to washed out/scoured bridge approaches brought by the onslaught of Tropical Storm “Urduja” last Dec. 16.

The DPWH-BDEO advised motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and regulations upon crossing Caraycaray Bridge.

The bridge will also be closed in case Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issues “Heavy Rainfall Warning” in the area, Bolido said.

He added that the total bridge replacement will be undertaken by the DPWH to fully restore the integrity of the structure as they are now preparing detailed plans and cost estimates for its complete rehabilitation under the calamity fund. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
