DTI: 100-K to 200-K more jobs eyed under Alert Level 2

By Pearl Gumapos

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Monday (Feb. 7) said around 100,000 to 200,000 jobs are set to return to the labor market with the National Capital Region’s (NCR) de-escalation to Alert Level 2.

“I have to explain also iyong operating capacity natin na nag-increase by 20% since we have gone to Alert Level 2. Iyong dating 30% operating capacity indoor ay naging 50% na ngayon, and iyong dating 50% na outdoor ay naging 70% na,” DTI Spokesperson Ruth Castelo said during the Laging Handa public briefing.

“So iyong 20%, according to DTI estimates, we have around 100,000 to 200,000 jobs na makakabalik,” she said.

Meanwhile, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) estimated that around 16,000 jobs will return weekly.

Castelo also said that the upcoming opening of borders for fully-vaccinated foreign tourists will support the country’s economic recovery.

“Ang mga foreign investments natin ay dadagsa na ulit. Ang mga international investments natin papasok na. Pagka maraming foreign investments tayo, kasama ang employment, so maraming magkakaroon ng trabaho,” she said. -ag
