DTI reiterates price freeze, warns violators

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will strictly enforce a price freeze on basic necessities and medical supplies amid the declaration of state of calamity in the country.

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez in a press briefing pointed out that those engaged in price gouging and manipulation will be meted fines and penalties.

“Any person or entity violating the act shall be charged accordingly, fine ranges from 5,000 to two million, and imprisonment of not less than five years but not more than 15 years,” Lopez warned.

The DTI allowed employees in the manufacturing sector such as enterprises and logistic to enter and cross checkpoints to prevent adverse effect on food production and other basic needs.

The department also made an appeal to private companies to provide free accommodation and transportation to their workers.

“Wala na masyadong movement at hindi na magkahawaan, talagang doon lang sila kung talagang gagawin ang operation na ‘yon (Less movement and no contagion. They should stay there if they need to operate). ‘Yun po ang best na arrangement para hindi gumalaw at hindi na bumabyahe nang malayo, hindi na sumakay sa public (It’s the best arrangement to lessen movement and travel without the need for public transportation),” he said.

Meanwhile, the agriculture department also allowed the movement and entry of veterinarians, farmers, and fishermen.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has appealed that fishermen should undergo medical screening at checkpoints to ensure their health and safety. ##
