Duterte appoints ex-AFP chief as MARINA head

MANILA — President Rodrigo R. Duterte has appointed former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Rey Leonardo Borja Guerrero as new administrator of the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina).

Duterte signed Guerrero’s appointment on April 26, replacing Marcial Quirico Amaro III who was fired in January this year due to “excessive” foreign travels.

Guerrero will serve as Marina administrator until July 22, 2022.

During the recent AFP Change of Command rites, Duterte announced his plan to appoint Guerrero to head Marina.

The President has commended Guerrero’s exemplary leadership that led to the successful facilitation of the clearing and reconstruction efforts in war-torn Marawi City.

He said the military was also able to prevent the resurgence of any terrorist threat “that could have escalated to another conflict and hampered the city’s progress” under Guerrero’s leadership.

The Commander-in-Chief also noted “unparalleled” increase of number of communist and terrorist surrenderees from less than 800 to more than 5,000 during Guerrero’s tour of duty.

Guerrero was replaced by Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr. as new chief of staff of the AFP.

Malacañang has also released the appointment paper of former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald ‘Bato’ dela Rosa and Valfrie Gacias Tabian.

Duterte appointed dela Rosa and Tabian on April 30 as Director General and Deputy Director of the Bureau of Corrections, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Palace also announced the appointment of six prosecutors.

They are: Roderick Rojas Aquino as associate city prosecutor of San Fernando City; Wallad Abdani Jamil Padate as assistant regional prosecutor of Socksargen; Jennifer Angeles Balboa-Cahig as deputy city prosecutor of Baybay City; Nikkie Rose Dela Pena Esperanza as deputy city prosecutor of Bacoor City; Edgar Ambon Ambagan in Tagaytay City; and Ma. Victoria Datuin Cabrera in Dagupan City. (Jelly Musico/PNA)
