E. Visayas poll bets asked to spare trees from campaign ads

TACLOBAN CITY –– The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 8 has  reiterated its call on candidates and their supporters to stop nailing campaign posters on trees and minimize waste this campaign season.
As the campaign period for elections kicked off, DENR Regional Executive Director Crizaldy Barcelo said the practice is unlawful, noting that trees become susceptible to diseases and attacks of harmful insects when harmed by nailing, and eventually may cause the tree’s death.
In a press briefing Monday, Barcelo cited section 3 of Republic Act 3571, which prohibits the cutting, destroying, or injuring of trees in public schools, roads, and other public areas.
Section 3 of Presidential Decree 953,  stipulates imprisonment of six months to two years, or a fine of not less than PHP5,000, or both imprisonment and fine for violation of the same prohibitions.
“Do not litter our streets and clog our waterways with campaign materials and other sorts of wastes, strictly observe Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000,” Barcelo said.
However, the regional director emphasized that this appeal to stop harming trees and maintain cleanliness is a call that extends beyond the election period.
He thus enjoined the public to be vigilant in protecting the trees and environment at all times.
Barcelo also urged the public to immediately report all forms of violations to the authorities.
