Former senator and lawmaker Rodolfo Biazon, who also served as the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), passed away on Monday, June 12. He was 88.

This was announced by his son, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon on social media, saying that his father was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2022 and had undergone treatment since.

“It is perfectly fitting that today, Independence Day, at around 8:30am, the soldier who dedicated his life and laid it on the line in defending freedom and democracy, has been set free from the pains of this world,” he said.

He said the late senator battled pneumonia twice, with “the second being more serious than the first which had further weakened his lungs.”

“He courageously fought his last battle like a Marine would, but it is the Lord’s will which prevails. The family is grateful that we were able to spend his last moments with us intimately and peacefully,” he said. “We send off a warrior and gentleman, secure in the knowledge that the faithful servant has fought the good fight and has finished the race.”

His family has yet to announce details of his wake.

Biazon was born in Batac, Ilocos Norte on April 14, 1935.

He graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1961 and took over several roles in the military, including commanding general of the NCR Defense Command from 1988 to 1990, AFP vice chief of staff from 1990 to 1991, and AFP chief of staff in 1991.

He entered the Senate in 1992 and served until 1995. He was again elected as senator in 1998 to 2010.

He served as the representative for Muntinlupa from 2010 to 2016. – cf
