Filipinos in Peru told to avoid large crowds amid protests

The Philippine Embassy in Chile on Monday, Dec. 19, advised Filipinos in Peru to avoid large crowds and unnecessary travel amid the ongoing protests.

“In view of ongoing protests in Lima, Arequipa, Cusco and other locations in Peru, all Filipino nationals are advised to stay put in their respective residences,” the Embassy said in a statement.

Peru declared a 30-day national emergency after violent protests erupted following the ousting and detention of President Pedro Castillo.

The protests have left at least 25 dead and hundreds injured, according to authorities.

“With unconfirmed reports of a number of Filipino tourists stranded in Cusco due to airport closure, the Embassy also seeks the Filipino community’s support in being immediately informed through its Assistance-to-Nationals hotline: +569427220320 and through the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Lima +51997911872 should they receive news about any Filipinos direly affected by the ongoing crisis,” the Embassy said.

The Embassy assured that they are monitoring the situation and will coordinate with Peruvian authorities.
