As part of his promise to restore Pasig River’s old glory “after decades of neglect”, President Ferdinand R. Macos Jr. and First Lady Liza Marcos led the inauguration of Phase 1C of the Pasig River Urban Development Project showcase area in Intramuros, Manila on Sunday.

In a speech, President Marcos said the project aimed to make the Pasig River “look and feel” like famous waterways such as the Seine in Paris, the Thames in London, and the Chao Phraya in Bangkok.

The additional 250-meter development connecting the existing esplanade from Jones Bridge to Plaza Mexico and Fort Santiago marks the completion of the 500-meter showcase area of the Manila Old Downtown Segment.

Part of the ongoing “Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli” project, the newly inaugurated Phase 1C features pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, commercial zones, and green spaces that are expected to drive local economy and tourism through food and retail stalls, walkways, bike lanes, and boardwalk.

“The structures within the project are also targeted to use renewable energy and promote other ecological practices that are aligned with our environmental protection and conservation strategies,” Marcos said.

The Chief Executive thanked those involved in the project, including the Inter-Agency Council and the local government of Manila. He also encouraged the project implementers and stakeholders to “sustain the cleanliness, beauty, and security of the esplanade” and ensure that the whole project will be finished within the target frame.

Marcos also urged the public to rally behind the advocacy and contribute in their own way to save the Pasig River.

“Bringing the Pasig River back to life mirrors our ongoing journey towards a brighter future for our country. How well we do here will reflect our efforts in other areas of the country and how successful we are at improving and leaving the country a better place than we found it,” he said.

“Rest assured that apart from our enthusiasm and optimism, the First Lady and I will provide our all-hour support and commitment to the completion of this project, hopefully in three years’ time that will be our goal,” he added.

Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli Project, initiated through Executive Order No. 35, seeks to rehabilitate the Pasig River and nearby water systems as well as orders the relocating of informal settlers along the river banks. (with report from Allan Francisco)
