Five volcanic tremor events recorded in Taal Volcano – Phivolcs

The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) has recorded five weak eruptions of Taal Volcano on Wednesday (July 7).

As early as 5:18 a.m., the Taal Volcano Observatory recorded a small explosion, followed by two other  phreatomagmatic events at 9:15 a.m. and 9:26 a.m., which lasted for two to five minutes in each eruption.

Taal main crater has also displayed a phreatomagmatic burst and weakly erupted at 8:47 a.m. that lasted for seven minutes and generated a 300 meter-high plume, according to Phivolcs.

Taal Volcano Observatory resident volcanologist Paolo Revina said on Wednesday that the phreatomagmatic explosion on Wednesday was among the 55 volcanic tremors recorded in the past 24 hours.

The crater also released 7,560 metric tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2). where the plume reached 2,500 meters.

“Ang assessment nga diyan ng Phivolcs is tuloy-tuloy pa rin ang paggalaw ng magma dahil may tremors tayo. ‘Yung gas movement ay nandoon pa rin kasi mataas nga ‘yung SO2. Aside from doon, may mga low frequency volcanic earthquakes tayo,” Revina said. – Report from Ryan Lesigues / CF – rir
