GenTri to pay homage on hero’s 150th birth anniversary

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite – The city government is set to pay homage to its local hero, General Mariano Closas Trias, on his 150th birth anniversary on Friday (Oct. 12) with fitting tribute and commemorative celebration.

Gen. Trias was considered the first de facto Vice President of the Philippines during the revolutionary government established at the Tejeros Convention under General Emilio Aguinaldo on March 25, 1897.

Mayor Antonio Ferrer, with Cavite 6th District Rep. Luis ‘Jon Jon’ Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Morit Sison, Cavite Councilor’s League (CCL) Federation President Kerby Salazar, Cavite 6th Dsitrict Boardmember Felix ‘Jango’ Grepo, will lead city constituents in the wreath-laying ceremony at the hero’s monument on Oct. 12.

The commemorative activities will also be joined by members of the city’s Liga ng Barangay (LnB) through Federation president Jay Columna, Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation president Sam Morena, the 33 village chiefs and youth council presidents, and officials from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Gen. Mariano Trias was born Oct. 12, 1868 to parents Don Balbino Trias and Gabriela Closas in their house in Barangay Bagumbayan here. He died Feb. 22, 1914 at age 45 in Manila.

On Feb. 28, 1914, Legislative Act No. 2390 was passed by the Philippine Assembly, changing the town’s name to Malabon.

Six years later on Feb. 24, another Legislative Act No. 2889 was approved, finally renaming the town after one of its most famous sons, General Mariano Trías.

The town eventually transformed into the component City of General Trias after an overwhelming majority vote of the city residents through a plebiscite pursuant to Republic Act 10675 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino on Aug. 19, 2015.

Gen Tri as it is popularly called by locals became Cavite province’s seventh city and evolved into the province’s lone 6th legislative district after President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed Republic Act 11069 on Sept. 14, this year, which re-apportioned Cavite province into eight legislative districts.
